We pray for healing when someone is sick, even with serious, fatal illnesses....we have been praying for healing a lot lately.
But I was thinking on it...we all want healing for someone who is sick and facing illnesses...and we do pray for that, but there is another healing that is far more important....healing of the soul or spirit.
Jesus healed many people of physical infirmities, but He was more concerned about their eternal soul.
📖 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.” Luke 17:12-19
Jesus expects to see a change in our heart and behavior when we have been healed.
📖 Some men brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.” At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!” Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” Then the man got up and went home. When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to man. Matthew 9:2-8
The forgiveness of sins, the healing of the soul is a priority.
📖 The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.”
The man took Jesus at his word and departed. While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.” Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household believed. John 4:49-53 Because of a physical healing, the entire household experienced spiritual healing!
📖 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing. John9:1-7
Whether physical healing happens or just healing of the soul or both, it is to point to God. When physical healing does not happen, our responses should point to God as well.
We know, sometimes healing takes place, and other times it feels our requests aren't answered.
But our first concern should be the soul. If, for what ever reason, God only knows, the physical body fails we can have assurance that their soul was saved by grace, healed by mercy and we spend eternity with our Savior.
🙏My prayer for you is healing; that you experience a renewal of your soul, whether you come to understand and believe who Christ is for the first time or you have been broken and need to be bathed in His love. May your soul find healing today❤
