But A Spark

I have enjoyed watching the series Call the Midwife on PBS. It is based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth recounting her time as a midwife in the Docklands of London in the 1950s and 60s. They lived with and worked with the nuns of of St Raymond Nonnatus.

One of the nuns, Sister Monica Joan, was quoted as saying;
"I am but a spark in the divine flame"
I found that a great...even profound statement, and of course it "sparked" my brainπŸ˜‰

A humble statement. Recognizing that we are a small part of something bigger....
even more we wouldn't exist without the "devine flame".
πŸ“– Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. Genesis 2:7

Just as a spark wouldn't exist without the fire...we would not without our God
πŸ“– I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing John 15:5

A spark burns bright briefly, as we do in the frame of eternity.

And flies upward....as we should be striving up... towards heaven

A spark can light something else...if burning hot enough and bright enough, if it carries enough of the source with it.
As with us...if we are not completely consumed and alight by our "Source " we will not have the power to ignite others around us.

Freedom to Speak

Free to speak...but speak what?

In our world today the phrase Freedom of Speach is thrown about in many different situations...it is in our country's constitution....And I don't disagree that it is important. 
But speak what??
πŸ“– So Balaam answered and said to Balak, “Did I not tell you, saying, All that the Lord speaks, that I must do’?Numbers 23:26
ALL that the Lord speaks!!
How do we know what the Lord speaks??
That is why we call the Bible "God's Word"  He spoke it in to existence. 
πŸ“–  All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-179⁸
The Word of God is where we find what God intends for us each day.
πŸ“– For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
It will direct and convict our hearts.

In the Bible study our ladies are doing one line stuck out to me last week....
"Don't speak until you are spoken through." (The Power of  Woman's Words Workbook Sharon Jaynes pg. 117)
What comes out our mouth should be what comes from God.

Our words have the power to build up or tear down....to bring life or death.

Speak Life

In the darkness, death, and destruction that may seem all around us we speak the Lord's words,  we speak truth but we speak it in  love, we speak grace, we speak compassion, we speak restoration, we speak generosity, we speak forgiveness....we speak life.

Seems Greener

I am sorry this is late this week.
This has been a bit tougher to write...as discontent seems to lurk close by, just waiting for an opportunity. 

Always seems redder, fresher, greener, bigger,  better.
At first I may have been talking about fruit....but then...about most anything.
Doesn't that thought process seem to be so prevalent today?
"I want that house because it is bigger and more impressive", "that car because it is more luxurious", "that job because it will make me rich or give me more prestige", "that person because they will make me happier than the one I am with", "their life instead of the one I've got." etc etc.
Eve said "I want that fruit because it will make me smarter...better....like God." (Beware of the quick, work free, pain free way to anything)
The fruit always looks fresher on the other tree...the grass always seems greener on the other side of the fence.  They key to that statement is "always seems or looks" greener.  Not "always is"
Now I am not talking about a desire to do better; improvement on your job, home, lifestyle, health, relationships, walk with the Lord.
I am talking more about a discontented spirit.  Unsatisfied with where you are, with what you have been given, with the season that you are in.

πŸ“–  Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own? Luke 16:10-12


That is how sin works....
Sin is almost always enticing....it isn't until after we have made the step in that direction that we may realize..."what is this?!? This isn't better, isn't more  fun, or more beautiful" etc. We don't see the ugly side of sin until later....and sometimes even then we convince ourselves (allow satan to continue to convince us) that the sin we have chosen isn't ugly,  isn't hurting us or those around us.

It is really the only way Satan can entice us from the truth....he has to dress it up to look better than what we have.

The few times when it doesn't have to look better is when we already have given the devil a foothold; with anger or jealousy or bitterness already prevalent.   Then we aren't  motivated by the temptation of something "better", we are motivated by our emotions...we don't care if it looks bad...or might hurt another....we just want revenge...or what might give us, what we believe to be, justice or our fair share.

πŸ“–  “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. Ephesians 4:26-27

Way way back, at the beginning, sin looked enticing. 

πŸ“– The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” Genesis 2:9,16-17

πŸ“– Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”
“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. Genesis 3:1-7
The fruit looked enticing,  but the words and promises that came with it were what made it even more so. 
All that God had given them in the Garden, all their needs supplied, all that they could want.
But Satan convinced Eve, who then convinced Adam that "the fruit on this tree is sweeter", "the grass is greener over here" "We will be far better off"
And they became discontent with God's provision, became dissatisfied with their relationship with God.

Satan, as the serpent, convinced Eve that in choosing the fruit there would be many benefits and little or no consequences. 
As I said before ...beware of the quick fix...faster way to righteousness, to a deeper relationship with Christ.
"One pill you can lose weight without exercise," "Earn lots of cash by doing little work,"
"Eat the fruit and be as wise as God Himself."
Our spiritual walk is going to be work; trials and temptations are going to happen...that is what strengthens our spiritual relationship, makes us stronger in the Lord, builds Godly character. 

The more time we spend with Him, the more we will know Him.
πŸ“–    If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.  If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. John 15:7-10

Our discontent that leads to sin doesn't usually just affect us.  Typically we take people along with us...even if we don't intend to.
Eve didn't just try the fruit herself ...she encouraged Adam to join her, but it also affected generations to come.

How do we avoid that trap of discontentment, so we aren't seeing things as much more enticing "over there"?
We keep our hearts in line with Christ.  We spend time with Him everyday.  We read, learn and do His word.   
πŸ“– Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:4-5

We learn what it is to be content.
 πŸ“– I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:11-13

Constant Cross

 Last year my Easter post was titled Message of Hope (Coffeetime With A Dear Friend April 13, 2020)  it was about finding Hope in the cross.
I encouraged people to leave a cross of some form up and visible until we saw some sort of break or relief from the pandemic...from the darkness we felt closing in around us.
At Christmas time each week of Advent was about the cross.   Hope in the cross, Peace, Joy and Love in the cross. 
My cross is still up....and was ready for this Easter. 
Will I take it down for the summer??? 
My hope in the cross does not stop...
The pandemic numbers are improving...a vaccine is out there, to prevent the severity of the illness...but not eliminate it.  Definitely an improvement, but our lives are still different.  There are so many other things in many of our lives that have irrevocably changed how we live.

Do the crosses we have to bear go away?
Sometimes we feel it more prominently.  Sometimes it feels more and more is being added and we strain under the weight of it 
πŸ“– Then he said to them all: Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. Luke 9: 22-24
πŸ“– Then Jesus told his disciples, If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.  Matthew 16:24  (ESV)

That is what Jesus asked...commanded of His followers.  Are we choosing to follow Him?
Then we are called to do the same. 

In the accounts of Christ's torture and crucifixion three of the gospels; Matthew,  Mark and Luke, describe a man being pulled from the crowd and shouldering the burden that was Jesus's.   

πŸ“– As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. Luke 23:26

In John it says;
πŸ“–   Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha) John 19:17

Traditionally it is felt that Christ was made to carry His own cross or crossbeam (carrying the cross, patibulum (crossbeam in Latin), (Wikipedia)). Either way would have been extremely heavy, and at least starting out He carried His own. But He had been beaten beyond recognition, His physical condition was certainly not at it's best, so they pulled Simon from the crowd and forced him to carry the burden placed on Jesus.
Certainly it can be said about some of our spiritual conditions right now, if not our actual physical selves; feeling beaten up, run through the wringer, crushed, etc. (but certainly not to the extent Jesus had been).
πŸ“– We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.  2 Corinthians 4:8-9
Someone gave Him aid...helped Him carry the burden.

πŸ“– Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends John 15:13
God gives us those people who come along side and help.

But more importantly He said:
πŸ“– Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
Jesus said He will shoulder our cross....we only have to let go, stop trying to carry it alone. 
He already took our sins and shame when He carried that cross beam.  My sins, your sins, the world's sins were weighting it down.
When what we are carrying begins to feel as if it will crush us..
He is there and wants us to give it to Him.
He has already won that battle...we don't have to carry the full weight of it.
Yes....things may be different,  life may have changed, but we don't have to let it destroy us!
Yes....the cross is forever....what Christ did on it was for all.
πŸ“– The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. Romans 6:10
But He no longer carries it....He is no longer nailed to it....He left the cross on the hill.
It is our reminder, of what He did to take the burden of our cross upon Himself. 
We take up our cross and follow Him....knowing He is going to carry it with us...taking the burden (he already has!)
He wants to comfort the sorrow,  ease suffering, bring light to the darkness.
My cross may just stay right where it is...
when I am feeling overwhelmed and pressed to the point of being crushed I don't have to carry mine alone.... it will remind me He carries it for me....
